Background Story
  • Where were you born & what follows from that? -- Prosperity, WV. Started digging coal as a kid.
  • Who are/were your parents & what follows from that? -- No one special.
  • Are your parents still alive & what follows from that? -- Mom died when he was a kid. Father died of cholera a couple of years ago.
  • What was the first time you knew the supernatural existed & what follows from that? -- in Germany. Still working out the details
  • Why did you leave Home & what follows from that? -- Drafted into WW1 in Summer 1917. Returned home Spring 1919.
  • What did you leave behind & what follows from that? -- His naivete
  • What do you want & what follows from that? -- To live a quiet life and be left alone.
Jake always knew he was different. He heard voices in his head and saw things happening to people that turned out to be true. But he learned at a young age to keep that to himself. Everyone just thought he was crazy, including his own father. His mother was the only one who believed him, but she said she had to keep it a secret. So he kept to himself and avoided physical contact with people as best he could.

He started working in the coal mine at thirteen after his mom died. He lived a relatively quiet life until he was drafted into the Great War at 20 years old. It was under the intense stress of trench warfare that he learned the full scope of his psychic powers and discovered what he was made of. The constant barrage of voices in his head might have driven a lesser man mad. The endless barrage of hate and fear from all around him was often hard to distinguish from his own. But he found his inner steel and forged on, becoming an EOD specialist.

Then one day, Jake saw what he could only call a demon. The creature was invisible to everyone else around and it was clearly controlling the German forces. He thought he was finally losing his mind until the thing looked directly at him. He ran, managing to escape in the chaos and instinctively dropping a Mind Block to stay hidden from the creature. He never spoke of the encounter, knowing from experience what would happen if he dared tell anyone.

Jake came home changed. He was hardened and even more withdrawn. After his father died, Jake became obsessed with the creature he saw in Germany. When he wasn't working or hunting, Jake would venture out to find any information on monsters and demons that he could. He learned much from the nearby Indian tribes and he collected a mountain of paper clippings with strange and unexplainable tales, which he keeps on a giant corkboard in his tiny house. He even followed up on some of them, gathering snippets of knowledge on the world of the supernatural from other town nutjobs up and down the Appalachian trail.

What he was supposed to do with that knowledge, he had no idea. He just knew he had to protect himself if that demon or anything like it showed up in Prosperity.
