24) Mistoan War Academy

The Arena District is the oldest section of the city. Many of the city's oldest families reside here. Above all, the people in the Arena District are some of the most traditional and formal.

24) Mistoan War Academy

Mistoan War Academy

Named after General Mistoan, the Western Empire general who single-handedly united the people who settled the ruins that once stood where the VasPasseon palace now gleams. The academy is a virtual fortress in its own right with a curtain wall, a parade yard and a keep. Within the academy, the Knight trainees learn about military etiquette, strategy, supply and the code of chivalry in addition to combat and horse training. Graduates of the Academy are the equivalent of a Palladin and are entered in the rolls of the Mistoan Order. Typically the academy only accepts those from the noble and merchant elite. Upon graduation, the new Palladin is given a commission in the Llornian Militia or the Mercenary Corps as an officer. The recruit is required to fulfill an eight year obligation of service in either the Militia or the Mercenary Corps, or a combination of the two. Afterwards, the character is free to pursue other goals, though many choose to stay in the military.

Fox eventually finds his way to the War Academy and says, "Excuse me please, I need to speak to someone who knows something about local history as it pertains to fortifications in the area. I was with one of the groups hunting Orc Bands, and an Orc we captured and questioned seemed to suggest that such may be being used for shelter."

He feels he has to explain why he wants the information, because a Canid like himself asking for such information without good cause might be suspected of spying.

A squire stops and listens to Fox. He has a haughty air about him, clearly doesn't like the look of Fox, but sneers a helpful answer regardless. "Maester Aelmon is the scholar with whom you need to speak, creature. He usually found in the library on the second floor. Take yourself to him. Now."

Assuming Fox follows directions, and doesn't start a fight, he quickly finds his way to the upstairs "library" which, as it turns out, is more akin to a small archive surrounding a small reading room beside a window overlooking the training grounds. A flabby man with scraggly salt and pepper, shoulder length hair but a baby smooth face with bags under his eyes sits in the window holding a book in his lap and looking down his nose at the pages. He looks up as Fox enters, "Yes? Are you lost?"

Fox is unsurprised be the attitude of the first human, it is unfortunately common among many races when facing those of other races (even his own race). At least he provided an answer, hopefully he is honest, even if disdainful.

Fox quickly locates the library and the somewhat odd looking human within.
OOC Comments
From the description, this person sounds like a Eunuch, though IC Fox has no reason to know that.
Fox responds to the question, "If you are Master Aelmon, then I am not. If you are he, I have a question for you."

He waits for confirmation and, if it is granted, continues, "I was with a group of Orc hunters. We defeated a party of Orcs and questioned one. The Orc seemed to indicate that the main encampment his group came from is a number of days journey to the east and somewhat to the south...the Orc said 8 but it is unclear how much time was spent each day traveling. He indicate the camp was in an old fortress south of a canal. We need to locate this site if the raids on the caravans are to be ended."

His brow furrows in concentration, and perhaps because the thought distracts him, he accidentally lets slip the book from his lap. It crashes to the floor. "Damn! That's no way to treat such a binding!" he curses himself and gathers up the book gingerly. After setting the book aside, he gets to his feet and guilelessly says to Fox "Well then, let us dig into the library and see what we can find eh?" After quite a while rummaging around among the bookshelves, he finally produces something that doesn't produce another self-admonishment. He lays a scroll on the central table, unbinds it, and rolls it out. "There are a number of old fortifications in that general region, as a matter of fact, the Eastern Territories are dotted with a high concentration of such given the history of the area, but I believe I recall a lecture from a visiting Dwarven architect about the ruins of an ancient tower that used to be in the same general area which you describe." He points to an area on the map (indicated by the red question mark).

Fox inquires, "Is there any larger or more detailed map of the area? If not, am I permitted to copy the relevant portions of the map?"

He briefly wishes that he had the gift of memorizing things at a glance, something many other psychics have but which is not a gift of Healers. There are many gifts healers lack, but no one can expect to be gifted in all things, there are many cautionary tales to that end in his tribe. If permitted to do so, he will copy the relevant portions of the map. If there is a larger scale map, he will use that to copy from. He will copy with as much detail as he can.

Fox does not have a Mapmaking skill, so I will roll some skills that may have some relevance:
Land Navigation [dice]4[/dice] of 51% (Seems obvious)
Literacy (Wolfen) [dice]5[/dice] of 60% (For copying skill, Literacy is a decent choice in the type of society)
Wilderness Survival [dice]6[/dice] of 55% (In case it includes some basic mapping skills)
Literacy (Eastern) [dice]7[/dice] of 35% (as above, but to read anything on the map as well)
Math (basic) [dice]8[/dice] of 75% (to calculate angles and curves)

The paunchy figure moves about his belt and pushes some wild hair out of his face. "No, I'm afraid this is the best example the library has to offer on the region that's accessible like this, but feel free to sketch its likeness on your own parchment or paper. No tracing or impressions though! This isn't in the best condition, so you shall not handle it directly."

Fox copies the map freehand as best he can and then checks his copy against the original. If the copy is fair, he will thank Master Aelmon and leave. If the copy does not look good enough, he will try again if he has the paper. If he is uncertain of how good the copy is, he will ask Aelmon's opinion.

Before he leaves...he will ask, "Is there anywhere else I might seek a larger scale map of the area? A guild of cartographers or the like perhaps?"

Master Aelmon shakes his head. "My knowledge is limited, granted, but I don't think such exists within the Domain of Man, though I could be mistaken. Good day to you, and happy hunting!" He disappears back into the library stacks.

Fox will carefully check his map for accuracy and properly ensure the ink is dry before storing it for transport. Once that is done, he will head to look for the others, last he heard, they were headed for the temple district, he will check there first.
