Cai wrote: "So, what do you think of these ridiculous new recruits? I'm not impressed. That heathen girl called herself a princess. Really! She wears animal skins and smells like a stable. Is her crown made out of woven grass? And I've never heard of a princess who doesn't shave her legs. Do you believe that rubbish? I don't know much about that mage warrior fellow, but no mage is ever interested in cybernetics so I haven't bothered to remember his name. Even the one who calls himself a cyber-knight seems barely interested in cybernetics. That's preposterous! Why call himself that? Seems ignorant at best. I didn't think I'd say it, but I just might miss those surly dykes. They at least were open to augmentation."
Logan laughs out loud at Cai’s comments, “Yeah I’m not sold either, bud. How about this man ranting and raving about some dude name God? Listen bud, if you’re crazy about some man, whatever, I’m not judging you on your lifestyle choice—just don’t push that nonsense on me. I mean hell, we already have team member obsessed with someone, I doubt another will really help. To be quite honest, I miss the Lesbos as well, bud. Worst came to worst, at least it provided us with some entertainment during this journey.” Stopping to catch his breath, Logan continues, “And don’t get me started on that Cyber-Knight—fucker’ straight up ignored me earlier. I got half a mind to waltz into his feeble mind and take-over that quiet little area like only I can. In my opinion you can’t trust the strong-silent type…be on the lookout for that one.”

Clay wrote: "Hey, need your opinion."[/b[ Reaper starts off as he grabs a cup of coffee and heads the two outside. "The other night, I had this vision. I have been having them lately of things that may come to pass. They haven't been very accurate, but pieces of them have come to light. Like at the battle of Bow Island I saw the bug insects, but my vision had Shane dead. This time, I saw this giant space station, and then it did a Hyperspace Fold. Do you think my visions are going to get more accurate?"

Following Reaper outside, Logan grabs a coffee and lights up a cigarette as the two speak. Reap’s having visions? That’s pretty strange…I wonder if he has abilities that are like mine. “Visions, eh? I can’t say I’ve ever had any experiences with those before, bud. However, it does appear to be up my alley. If you’re visions are anything like my abilities, then yes, they will grow to become more accurate in time just as mine appear to grow more powerful in time. But first, what in the hell is a Hyperspace Fold? Is this something else from your home world?”

After setting the ATRV down in the parking lot, Cale shuts the engines down. Getting out of the pilots seat, he did a few stretches to loosen up. Heading down the stairs to the main floor, the cook heads over to Shane. "Boss-man, I'm heading to the closest market. There was no food of quality at Ishpeming. We have enough good hearty chow for about 2 1/2 to 3 weeks. I would like to fill up our stocks while we're here. Don't know how long we're going to be in the field and I want to top off." With that he walks off.

Upon reaching the market area, Cale starts to order the food on his list. After making the order and leaving the lot number that the ATRV is parked at. Walking around, he spies a used book store. He enters to see if there is any cookbooks that would peak his interest.

"I don't know if these visions are anything either, maybe bad gas. Or Cale's cooking. Back in the distant past, there were drugs that induced visions. Maybe it's something in the air here that is making me have them. I have only been here a fairly short while. I just don't know." Reaper confesses.

"As for the Hyperspace Fold, that is something I can tell you about. Basically it's a way to travel great distances in a blink of an eye. I am not sure exactly how the technology works, but it was explained to me by using a piece of paper. Put a dot on one side, and another on a different side. Then fold the paper so the dots are close to each other. And travel that distance instead of the full length." He scratches his scruffy hair. "Robotechnology wasn't my forte, I left that for the tech heads. But the did talk a lot about it. It's proven technology though, and has been around for almost a millennia, maybe longer. The Robotech Masters and the Zentraedi have been using it. Earth has only had it for a relatively short period of time though. We picked it up from a crashed alien space ship, rebuilt it, and made it our flag ship. In fact that is where Minmei became a star!" Reaper starts to get excited talking about his iconic love. "See, the SDF-1 on it's maiden voyage was attacked. They took the ship from the dry docks on the ground and started flying into space. But they weren't able to get past the blockade. So instead of leaving Orbit, they came closer to the ground and tried a Hyperspace Fold to behind the Moon." His eye's roll, "As you know, not everything is as they seem. Instead of going to the Moon, they went to Pluto! And instead of just the SDF-1, it took the whole Island it was built on. And in doing so, sealed Minmei's fate into the lives of everyone on Earth. Because on that trip back from Pluto, they held the first Idol Contest, and Minmei with every talent she had, only at 16, had won! It started something that no one has been able to duplicate!"

"I guess I should help out Conner, unless we need to get anything from Lazlo. I am pretty much still stocked for combat, and I can't think of any other weapons I may need. Heck, I don't even know what Lazlo really has to offer."

Shane relaxes a little as they get to the safety of Lazlo. He asks everyone what they have planned for the day and makes sure everyone has a chance to do any shopping they may need to do. "Listen up everyone. Before we head out again, make sure you are ready for dealing with the extreme temperatures we will be facing. We are headed way up North, so make sure you have the proper clothing for the environment. If anyone needs any weapons or gear this is the last place to get it. Even though this is a pretty safe city, make sure someone knows where you are going or better yet. Take a friend with you. Also, once we figure out what that stone is and whether we are going to sell it or not, we'll give everyone their cut."
Cale wrote:After setting the ATRV down in the parking lot, Cale shuts the engines down. Getting out of the pilot's seat, he does a few stretches to loosen up. "Sounds good. Speaking about food, I've noticed some of the others eying that Golden Apple. You might want to eat it before someone gets a late night craving and snags it on you. I tell you it's been looking pretty appetizing to me. Just saying."
John wrote:Once they find a place to park in Lazlo, John quickly makes his way outside, though not quite as quickly as before as he had learned some means of coping with the close confines of the ATVR (if just barely). After a moment or two to gather his senses and ease his nerves once more, he takes a look around at the strange and wonderful city. Would that there were more places like this. The atmosphere glows with tranquility. Finally, he turns back to the others and finds Will. "I'm of a mind to see the bazaar, friend. Perhaps we could find someone who would know more about that stone that we found."
"Hey John. I wouldn't mind having one of the longer serving Roughnecks go with you if you don't mind. Not that I don't trust you, but I'd be remiss in my duties as leader here if I let you and Will walk off with something that is potentially worth a lot of money." He thinks for a second. "Why don't you take Conner with you. I think he needs a bit of a break. He's been working like a dog ever since the battle and could use a bit of breather, I think. Just hang on a sec while I get him."

Shane finds Conner and tells him, "I think you could use a bit of a break, Conner. Do you mind going into the city with John and Will to get that stone checked out? I'd like to have someone I trust with them. Find out what you can about it. If it is something we can use, keep it, otherwise sell it. Try to get Universal Credits if you do sell. I'll handle the installation of the turret until you get back with the people that are staying. Once you get back we can finish it off. Okay?"

Once everyone is on their way into the city, Shane will start to work on the installation of the turret on the ATRV. He'll work on it until it is complete and then start to work installing the PRC-5 Secure Radio's into his Sidewinder and body armor and all the other body amours.

The alarm goes off and Conner jumps out of bed. Freaking Lazlo! It is just the break of dawn and Conner is already fully awake and amazingly it has nothing to do with any kind of new machine he gets to work with. Lazlo! He throws on some pants and a tee-shirt and the insulated cover-all on top of those. “Right the first thing to do is increase the range of this baby.” He is of coarse talking about the CR-4T laser turret. He goes the practiced motions of making sure the parts are ready and everything is in place. “O.K., time to get this thing on top welded in and hooked up.”

Conner is about to suit up in his exoskeleton armor so he can get the turret on top of the ATRV when Shane asks him to accompany John and Will. “Sure thing. Let me tell you what I had planned for the turret. Also, would you mind if we did some shopping. Nothing big just for some personal stuff. Hey didn’t you say Will have to pay the group back for the amount of that ring he got? I will have the same place give an estimate on that as well.” He points out where he wanted to turret and the idea about the housing to protect the cable. Conner’s pride wanted him to stay to do the work but he trusts his leader completely so he agrees to let him do the work. The pride for his skill in his work easily matches that of Cai’s, it is just Conner doesn’t have to brag about it to reinsure himself how good he is. After telling the two new members to wait he takes a shower and then changes into some of his finer clothes. As the little group heads out he tells them the plan about the rock. “I can tell you this. If any human life had to be taken to make it we won’t use it. This group won’t have anything to do with something that is made from evil.” A grin creeps over his face as they head into town. I can’t wait. I have always wanted to visit here.

Conner will trust Will enough to pick out the best place to find out what the stone is but will still ask John if he feels that the place safe. If the thing turns out to leave a bad taste in his mouth he asks how much they could get for it. Again he defers to John and Will on whether or not this is a fair price. “While we are at it Will, why don’t we have the person check out your ring and give me a price on it.” If William looks over at Conner the look on his face can easily tell him that those last words where not a suggestion. With the two magic items done with it is time to shop. “Well guys you up for some shopping. I have some things I would like to pick-up and if you join me I will pay for you lunch. Hell, I will even front you the cash if you find something you like and don’t have the money now to pay for it.” The first place Conner looks for is a store that sells pre-rifts items. All he is really looking for are books or magazines on lost technology. Anything that can be useful when he rebuilds something or can give him ideas to invent something. Conner will spend up to a total of a $3000 credits on stuff plus anything the others want. He next moves on to a video store. This time he will spend up to $200, but will not buy pay for the other guys’ stuff. As much work as he has to do he still likes some down time and watching a good action movie helps him relax. About mid-day his stomach tells him it’s time to eat so he looks around for some where to eat. “What is a gyro? Sounds good.” Three sandwiches and two large fries later Conner walks out filling stuffed and happy. I have to get Cale to make those. He walks back inside to see if the guy will write down the recipe for him.

“If you guys don’t mind there is one more thing I would like to do and I really feel like Lazlo is the best place I have a shot at doing it.” He will look for a library. There he asks if there is a section that details all the different kinds of D-Bees in North America. If the person is willing to help he asks if they have any knowledge about the type of alien Emma was. He will go into great length and detail about what she looked like. “She had completely humanoid features the only thing different was her skin color. Most of her body was a light grayish-blue color with darker blues highlighting her cheeks and on her eyelids. Her hair was white and her umm… never mind I think you don’t need to know that. I guess her race has no problem magic or technology because she was a techno-wizard.” If the person asks why she never told him the name of her race he states. “It just never came up. I didn’t care at the time what she was; all I cared about was that she was with me.” If they find out the name of her race he then asks if there are any in the city. If there is time left in the day he will head out to see if he can find anyone of her race. From there it is a race to see if he can find someone that knew her before they have to head back to the ATRV. With a heavy heart and a sigh Conner thinks to himself. Please, please let me find her family. I have to tell them what happened, I owe them that much. I have to get this weight off of my shoulders.

At the ATRV: Clay, Shane, Cai & Dave
Shane advises the group to be prepared for the extreme weather conditions of the north, and reminds them that this is their last stop before heading that way. He also insists that everyone use the 'buddy system' to be safe while in Lazlo. He concludes by noting that if they choose to sell the stone, he'll make sure to divvy-up the proceeds from its sale at that time. Before Cale leaves, Shane advises him to eat his apple before someone else does. As Clay doesn't know much about Lazlo or have any pressing need to address, he stays behind with Shane to help in preparing the tools and material for Conner's next projects. Cai lends his substantial technical knowledge as well, while Dave generally facilitates in a menial capacity as he has little technical expertise. By the time the others have returned, the four of them have managed to incorporate the ten PRC-5 radios into various items.
TGM NOTE: Shane, please select the specific ten items which are to be upgraded to the PRC-5 radio system. Notify me via PM.

Cale & Sir Benjamin Payne
Cale finds an excellent market which offers a wide variety of foodstuffs and spices. With Sir Benjamin Payne along as company, he manages to procure everything he needs at a reasonable price. One thing he does note is the distinct absence of scrapple. None of the shopkeeps have the slightest idea what he's talking about when he mentions it, and it's apparently not a part of their culinary culture as, even after describing it and its preparation, they simply shake their heads confounded. Another curiosity which he notes is a spice which he's never heard of or seen before. The dried pink petals are roughly hexagonal in shape on the ends of bright green stems that look more like vines. The proprietor of "Herb's Herbs," where Cale purchased his spices, is a middle-aged man decked-out in warm traveling clothes who looks more well-suited to the role of a wilderness scout than that of a culinary retailer and specialist. Herb advises him that the spices of this flower are to be used in strict moderation as they can have potentially hallucinatory side-effects.
Image
Making mental note of the unusual dried flowers for a later, possible investigation, Cale returns to the ATRV late in the day to stock his spice rack, storage bins,, and freezer with the help of Sir Ben.

John Walker, Will Summers, Conner Gunsmith, & Logan
Conner reluctantly relays his plans concerning the desired turret modifications before joining the others on their outing into Lazlo. As they approach a cluster of arcane shops, Will and John discuss the selection of each and the general vibe given off by them. After a minor argument over their relative apparent merits, they corral the group into Caladore's Fantastic Artifacts. After politely brushing-off the low-end sales retail clerk, the group manages to find the proprietor, one Ignacius Caladore who identifies himself as a retired mage and former council member of the Tolkeen Guild of Mages who has dabbled in Conjuring, Invocations, and even Blue Flame magic.
Image
When the subject of identification and appraisal is brought up, Ignacius replies "I can use my expertise to identify and place a general value on the ring and the stone, but I charge by the hour. If it's a relatively common item, I won't even charge you because it won't take me long at all. Each hour of my dedicated time, however, will cost 10,000 credits as I might have to call in various subject matter experts who similarly charge me for their services." When Conner agrees (as per YIM conversation), Ignacius gives the group his solemn oath to defend the items with his life and notify them immediately upon having results for them. He then takes each of the two items into custody, and when he sees them remarks jokingly, "Perhaps I shouldn't have taken that oath. This ring looks quite valuable, and this stone...I've seen something like it before but I can't quite place it. My friends, this is going to take a while as these are truly obscure objects. What information can you provide me as to where you acquired them? Any information you provide can only speed the process of identification." After the group recounts to him what they know, Ignacius nods grimly and tells them he'll be in touch as soon as possible.

The group departs Caladore's Fantastic Artifacts, and follows Conner to locate an antiques store specializing in Golden Age artifacts. Not seeing anything particularly of the vein that he's looking for, Conner bides his time and pokes around knick-knacks bearing the names "Coca-Cola" and "GM" for a while until everyone else is done browsing. He also makes mental note that even those relatively tame Golden Age artifacts were routinely in the hundreds and thousands of credits. The media outlets he finds are primarily book stores which are quite en vogue in Lazlo as opposed to other forms of media entertainment. Along that line of inquiry, he finds absolutely no problem in locating no less than three local libraries. Perusing the books on xenobiology and archaeology, Conner sadly finds nothing which sufficiently matches the description of the woman named Emma with whom he was once enamored, let alone any traces to her family.

As the day draws to a close and night starts to fall, the group finally receives a summons from Ignacius. Upon arrival, the group notices that Ignacius' face is contorted with mixed emotions. He doesn't miss a beat and gets straight to the point. "I have identified these two artifacts and appraised them to the best of my ability. I'll have you know that I had to draw on no less than three of my most esteemed colleagues in order to verify my own findings regarding the ring and had to confer with two others regarding that...gem of yours." Ignacius takes a deep breath, lights a small, twisted and dried leaf with a cheap lighter, drags deeply, and as he exhales, begins to describe the objects. Everyone in the group can clearly see his hands are shaking. "The 'stone' you discovered in that woman's purse is nothing less than a soul gem energy cell. It's a demonic--rather Dyallian-creation of some magnitude. It was explained to me that these are used as a power source in their large engines of war. These things...they consume souls for fuel, and this one has roughly eighty or so souls trapped within it. I cannot imagine, nor was I able to determine, its potential value as only the truly evil would even consider using such an object despite its ability to effectively replace more conventional power sources like nuclear power plants and their magical equivalents."

He then motions for a woman with light brown hair framing her face and falling past her shoulders who stands a bit off to one side. She carries herself with confidence and her movements are marked with grace as she steps to the fore. Ignacius speaks, "This is Lorelei Stark, the mage who helped me to identify the gem's nature as well as the one who helped me identify the nature and qualities of the ring you possess. While the soul gem is certainly an object of pure evil, the ring in your possession is none other than one of the legendary Nine Rings of Elder. Lorelei will expound upon that a bit more," Ignacius steps back as the woman of small stature takes a step forward and places the ring on the surface of the table between them.
Image
"The silvery-gold colored alloy that makes up each ring's band is known as gantrium, a metal native only to a few worlds throughout the Megaverse. Gantrium is known for two properties — becoming magically indestructible after being forged in magical fire, and acting as a superb conduit for mystical energy. Unfortunately, the Splugorth control the lion's share of the gantrium trade, so it's almost never seen on the open market. Gantrium, therefore is usually sold for around a million credits an ounce when it does appear on the market. The gemstone set into the gantrium ring is known as xanthine. You can see that it looks like the strange cross between an impossibly deep blue sapphire and amber. The polished oblong xanthine stone alone is worth anywhere from five hundred thousand to one million credits. Like the gantrium, it is also an extraordinarily rare and efficient transmitter and magnifier of magical energy. This makes the stone highly desirable among all men of magic as a spell casting talisman. Aside from their metallurgical and gemological value, the Nine Rings of Elder are worthless beyond their aesthetic or economic value to those who can not work magic. To those who can, however, they are priceless. Just based on its properties, composition, and rarity, I would estimate its value to be in excess of fifty million universal credits. That being said, one would have to be a fool to part with it."

TGM NOTE: Deduct 160,000 Black credits or 80,000 Universal credits from the group fund for the identification & appraisal fee.

Logan pretty much keeps to himself and studies the two newcomers as Conner, Will, John and himself tour the city of Lazlo. During their travels Logan makes sure a continuing stream of tobacco smoke appears from the edges of his lips. He’ll joke and talk with the others he’s with, making sure to aid Conner on his ultimately fruitless journey to discover the origins of his once lover. Still, despite his outward welcoming appearance, Logan has his own doubts filtering through his mind. These new recruits haven’t sold me just yet…the Doc’ was on to something. Now, I didn’t see Will trading blows back at Bow Island with the rest of us. Hell, we almost lost Cale and Conner, plus I've got two fake arms after all that. Who knows, he could even be one of Gris-bitches minions sent here to spy on us. Either way, I got my fuckin’ eye on him. And this other one…John…he just waltzed right in after everything was said and done—what was he doing just watching us the whole time? Ain’t buying it. If he's scared of combat then we're gonna' have some problems cause we seem to stumble upon trouble wherever we go.

Once the group returns to Caladore’s Fantastic Artifacts, Logan is once again in a world of his own. Since both the ring and stone weren’t in his possession anyway, he truly couldn’t care less of what they actually did. Instead his mind was more focused on why the proprietor sported such a ridiculous haircut. This guy’s running a shop and he wears his hair all the way down to his ass like that? Moron. In a fight I’d grab that mane and toss his head through a window. Easy as pie. I mean he’d go down like a—wait, what’d that chick say? Snapping back to reality, Logan cuts anyone off whose talking and butts in, “Hold on, did you say fifty million credits!? FIFTY MILLION!? Holy shit! Dude, do you realize how much swag we could get for that little chunk of metal? Hell, I’ve worn rings better looking than that in my day anyway…. Conner, what do you think, bud? I know you'll be a voice of reason here.”

Conner just stands there in complete shock. You have to be fucking kidding me! That ring is worth that much and that…that stone! He closes his eyes and lets out a weird little laugh. His head starts to shake and he places his hand over his face and then drags it off.

“Can it Logan! So let me get this fucking straight. On one side I have this ring that is pretty much priceless like you said and on the other I have a stone that no one in their right mind would touch? At least no one I wouldn’t want to kill in the first place.” He steps back from the group and starts to pace racking his brain as what to do about this. “What do you expect from an evil, psycho bitch? Something great and powerful used for good? SHIT!” He throws his arms into the air and turns back facing the group. “So there are human souls trapped in that thing and it uses them up as it powers things. So even if I did for some fucked reason decided to take and uses it what happens when the souls are all consumed. Just pop over to some evil wizard and say hey think you could kill a hundred people or so and throw their souls in this rock so I power my machine, fuck that. Plus it’s got to corrupt the person using right? I mean the thing is evil, fucking evil.” He walks over and places his hands on the counter and starts to shake his head with his eyes closed again. He suddenly stops and looks over at William. “We are going to have talk to Shane about the ring. We just can’t hand over a 50 million plus ring to you and expect you to pay us back. It’s not fair to you in that you would never get any shares from the group for like ever and it’s not fair to the rest of the group either. Like I said we have to have Shane work out some kind of deal on letting you use the thing. It is just way to powerful too be sold and in the right hands it could really do some good.”

He turns and looks at John. “You hit it on the fucking head when you called it evil man. And I guess I got it right when I called it a soul stone.”

Conner tries to pull himself together and faces the two mages. “I could tell you were just as shaken as I am now when you found out about the stone. Your hands are still trembling from it. So what should I do now? I sure I just can’t take it outside of the gates and blow it the fuck up! And I am sure you would happily take it off of my hands and destroy it but for a fee right? Jesus Christ we should get a reward for what we have done. I mean we have just taken a powerful instrument of death out of the hands of a hell bent murderer and saved countless of lives just to have you make me pay to finally get rid of it.” Again he steps back and tries to calm himself down before speaking. “I’m sorry, I’m not mad at you. You just have to understand what we had to go through to get that thing, the lives it destroyed in Bow Inland and all the lives it took in Medicine Hat. No…no we aren’t going to have anything more to do with that stone. We did the world a favor by killing that bitch and taking it out of the hands of evil and now it’s your turn to do a favor for the world by destroy it. Just knowing the good we have done should be enough of a reward for the both of use.” Conner gives the stone one last look, picks up the ring and hands it to William. “That is not yours. It belongs to the group and is only on loan to you. Lets go.” Conner just turns and walks out the door heading back to the ATRV.

Once he gets back to the Pathfinder he explains the situation about the ring and what happened with the stone. To get his mind off the whole mess about the stone Conner dives into his work and gets the turret up and running.

“If you don't mind, Ignacius, I'd like to meet the group that brought these in,” Lorelei says, turning one of the legendary Nine Rings of Elder over in her hand. The soul stone sat on a table between them. So much potential for such a little artifact, she muses, inspecting the ring closely. She ends up spending most of the day at Caladore's Fantastic Artifacts, but her wait ends shortly after sunset. Conner, Logan, John and Will return to the shop. After exchanging glances with Ignacius, Lorelei takes a place off to the side to watch the group as her colleague greets his customers. Without giving it much thought, she whispers a couple of words that will allow her to see the auras of those gathered. One psionic, at least one mage... The fact that Conner seems to be the leader of the group confuses Lorelei somewhat. As far as she can tell, he is not a mage. Why is he here with these items? she wonders.

When Ignacius motions for her to come forward, Lorelei does so. She gently places the ring on the table and begins to describe all that she knows concerning it. “Aside from their metallurgical and gemological value, the Nine Rings of Elder are worthless beyond their aesthetic or economic value to those who can not work magic. To those who can, however, they are priceless. Just based on its properties, composition, and rarity, I would estimate its value to be in excess of fifty million universal credits. “Yes. This is a very rare ring. You shouldn't have any trouble selling it for fifty million credits, perhaps a bit more,” Lorelei repeats for Logan's benefit. “However, I'd urge your friend...” Lorelei looks directly at Will, “...to keep it. It really is priceless.”

As Conner turns to address his friends, Lorelei cannot help listening in. She revises her guess about Conner being the group's leader after he mentions Shane's name.
Conner Gunsmith wrote:Conner tries to pull himself together and faces the two mages. “I could tell you were just as shaken as I am now when you found out about the stone. Your hands are still trembling from it. So what should I do now?”
“To be sure, the origins and purpose of that stone are evil. No self-respecting mage will use such a device,” Lorelei tells Conner. She doesn't remind him that there are less than honorable magi out there, perfectly willing to drain souls for their own nefarious aims. Instead, she offers a suggestion. “To release the souls, an exorcism should be performed upon the stone. Then it should be destroyed and I'm sure you could manage that quite easily.”

If Conner (or any of the others) decides to abandon the soul stone and leave the shop, Lorelei will call out to him, “You'd leave an instrument of evil with two unknown magi?” She folds her arms across her chest with displeasure.

Arching an eyebrow, Logan tongues his cheek for a moment before slowly lowering his sunglasses down the bridge of his nose. “Watch yourself, bud. The last man who spoke to me that way ended up in a dark cell rambling insanities for the rest of his sorry days,” Logan says flatly before offering Conner a slight wink to show that he’s only saving face with the statement. Bringing his shades back up to their typical location, Logan switches his gaze over to Will. “So we can’t sell the damn thing then…. How about this,” Logan says with a sneer as his eyes seem to stare viciously at Will, “As repayment for the ring, you get to be our—how to put this delicately—indentured servant for the rest of your days? You know, simple shit: clean Cale’s dishes, shine my shoes, read Conner bedtime stories…nothing too serious. Cause something tells me a lug like yourself ain’t got the fifty mil’ to ante up right about now.”

Heh, that’d be hilarious if he thought I was serious…I’d love to have a personal maid running around the ATRV. With no sign of jest in his voice with the last statement, Logan decides to switch topics. Staring at the stone that the group brought with them, Logan addresses the woman in the room, “So what do you suggest we do with this stone? Because I got stuck with the last piece of evilness that this group stumbled upon and I sure as hell ain’t carrying that burden again. And I know that we ain’t leaving that sort of nastiness with you all here—no offense meant, it’s just who’s to say you two aren’t as evil as the woman we took it from.” Pulling a cigarette from his belt, Logan rolls the cylindrical piece of heaven over in his hands a few times before tucking it behind his right ear, “Conner, since you seem to have taken an interest in the damn thing, I say it’s your call—just know that I ain’t touching it.”

Leaning against his staff, John stands to the side of the group, watching the exchange. When Logan inquires about what to do with the stone, he says, "While I don't think it's our job to judge the Lady's character, and I'd guess by the way she looks at the thing that she's not too thrilled about keeping it herself, I'd think that leaving such an item lying around for someone to claim wouldn't be a very good idea."

(Rolls carried over)

Right before Conner hits the door he hears Lorelei’s words. He speaks to his teammates. “Give me a second.” He walks up to the counter and stares at the beautiful woman.

“It is true that I do not know either of you personally, but I do know what kind of people you are. I might not have magic or psychic powers, but then I did not need them to read the both of you. As I said before Mr. Ignacius’s hands were shaking. This is an easy sign that shows he has the same fear as my friend Logan has. Neither of them wants to even pick this cursed thing up.” He reaches out and lifts the gem off of the counter. “I also watched as he lit some incense to calm his nerves right before he spoke to us. This told me that he and I share the same desire to never have anything to do with it again. You also gave me signs. They were not physical like Mr. Ignacius but in the tone of your voice and the choice of your words. The first sign came from when you spoke about how no self-respecting mage would use this thing. The disdain in your voice told me you yourself would like nothing more than to find a person who would use such an item and destroy them. The second came when you told me how to destroy it. Why would an evil person give away the secrets to undo such a wonder gift? And then there was what you just said. A bit of shock and anger were in those words. I guessed that this stemmed from your own feelings that all evil must be stopped. Of course when I turned around and saw that you had your arms crossed over your chest it only confirmed that. So you ask me if I would just leave an instrument of evil in the hands of two unknown magi. I would not, but I will leave it in the hands of two that are good and I know that the both of you are.”

Conner walks over to Will, John and Logan. “William please let me have the ring. I will return it to you soon enough. The three of you should return to the ATRV and Logan could you please tell Shane about the ring and the stone. I also need you to tell him that I will be back later as I am seeing to the destruction of the soul gem.” He walks back over and addresses both Lorelei and Ignacius. “Mr. Caladore, Ms. Stark. Is there any way you can get an exorcism done on these stone right now? My friends and I along with the rest of the group are leaving tomorrow on a mission of great importance to our leader. The task will have to be completed before morning. I have stated that I trust you, but I would like to be there so that I can reassure the rest of the group that the gem was destroyed. To show my trust I will let you use the ring to help speed along the process.”

If arrangements can be made and they allow Conner to join he insists that they leave as soon as possible. On the way to the meeting place he asks the both of them. “You said this was a gem. If I just smashed it into smaller pieces could I sell those off without fear of them being used for evil purposes? What I mean is that it could not be put back together and used for its original purpose. I only ask this because as much as doing good deeds help feed the soul they do not feed the stomach. Nor does it pay for the repair of the armor or ammo for the weapons that helped fight evil. If it cannot so be it. Once you have upheld your side of the deal I invite you back to our vehicle Ms. Stark, so that you can witness me uphold mine."

Still leaning on his staff, the John the Preacher lifts his eyebrows in mild surprise. This guy doesn't leave anything half-done, does he? Finally, he stands up straight, stretching his arms out to relieve any stiffness from them, and turns to the others. "Well folks. Looks like there's nothing left to see here." He then turns to the two magi, bowing slightly at the waist and tipping his wide-brimmed hat, "Sir. Ma'am. It's been a pleasure." He then turns about and walks off with the others. After walking a few feet, still in ear shot of those in the magic shop, John stops and says, "You know. I'm famished. What's say we see what kind of grub this place can offer."

After Dr. Cai Caradoc finishes helping install the radios with Shane and Dave, he retires to his bunk area for awhile. There are some personal things he'd been neglecting with all the work and travel. He calls Spike over and tells him, "Dinner time, Spike! Today we have oodles of metal and electronics and who knows what else. It's a veritable feast, dig in." As Doc watches his odd pet eat, he notices the "familiar-looking pendant" and picks it up to examine.

Ah, Logan's ridiculously gaudy pendant. So some thief made off with it and fenced it to that dealer I visited. Serves him right if he never saw it again... Ahhhh... Damn it, Cai, he bought you dinner! He was extending some kind of gnarled olive branch with half its leaves missing, but he did try. You can't just ignore that. Besides, he'll return to his old ways again. Then you can torture him with your razor-sharp wit all over again, like a million paper-cuts! But for now, return the favor or damn yourself to some seriously bad luck down the road...

He continues to speak to Spike, despite the fact that the bionic lizard doesn't speak back. That doesn't seem to matter. "Oh, Spike. That bumbling fool got himself pick-pocketed... and by sheer coincidence it was fenced to the same junk dealer that I visited to buy your food. Well, he'll probably cry in his pillows every night for weeks if he doesn't get it back. But don't you tell anyone I was nice to that nincompoop! Not a peep, you sly slithering sentient saurus!"

Without any more ado, Doc gets up from his bunk, walks over to Logan's bunk, and places the pendant in the center of his pillow. He leaves no note or anything to indicate it was Doc who returned it. It wouldn't do his reputation well if it were known Doc was the one who did such a nice favor to Logan. "There. Maybe that man-child will keep better track of his baubles now."

Doc heads back to Spike and looks him over. "I need to know more about you, and you aren't one to talk. So... what other method of speaking might you possess?" Doc looks Spike over for a data port. If there isn't one visible, he'll attempt to "scratch his belly" to see if the bionic lizard will roll over. If there is no data port, Doc will look for a compartment, hatch, or some other sealed opening that might be opened. If he fails all of this, he will pet Spike with his Medical Sensor Hand, taking readings. The Epidermic Analyzer should especially show discrepancies in the skin surface, revealing possible outlets on the beast. The Radiation Sensor should pinpoint its power source, but also any data processor, as those typically run a bit hot.

Caladores adds, "It's near closing time. Sir, the stone is yours to do with as you please, but, please remove it from my shop on your way out. I do not wish to be in any way associated with an item of that nature. The onus is yours. Ms. Stark, f you're intent on exorcizing the stone prior to its destruction, I would recommend Sister Harcourt just around the corner. She doesn't have the greatest business acumen, but she has a big heart and would likely do such for a paltry fee." Caladores finishes his transaction with Lorelei by adding a fee for her services to her universal card. "Have good evening, sir, and it has been a remarkable experience doing business with you." He then motions Conner, John, Will, and Lorelei toward the entrance as he signals his staff to begin closing-up shop.
John Walker wrote:"Sir. Ma'am. It's been a pleasure." He then turns about and walks off with the others. After walking a few feet, still in ear shot of those in the magic shop, John stops and says, "You know. I'm famished. What's say we see what kind of grub this place can offer."
As Caladores escorts them to the door, he adds, "There's a restaurant run by a Fennodi down the street that serves delicious vegetarian cuisine. You would be remiss in leaving Lazlo without first enjoying some of the pan-seared flatbread sandwiches on the menu, and his chickpea-eggplant mash-ups are quite simply one of the true wonders of the Megaverse. Enjoy your evening, goodbye!" The door closes and the lot of them find themselves standing on the sidewalk. Will with the ring, Conner with the stone, and Lorelei in the company of both. Not far away there appears to be a block of nothing but restaurants and delicatessens competing for business.

At the ATRV: Clay, Shane, Cai & Dave
Caradoc speaks to his curious lizard pet as he watches it consume at least a full five pounds worth of scrap circuit-boards, and miscellaneous metal and electronic odds and ends. Once he recognizes the pendant, Cai quietly does a good deed and places the object on Logan's pillow. Returning to his room to continue his inspection of Spike, he finds that the little bugger is trying to get into his hermetically-sealed, large, metal trunk though the locking mechanism seems to be defeating his efforts. After discouraging him from such activities, Cai examines the critter closely. Upon close inspection two things become apparent: Spike is not manufactured, but is some sort of cybernetic being whose natural functions are technological in nature and somewhere between cybernetics and bio-systems; he also discovers that there's a small, hidden compartment along Spike's dorsal ridge. Throughout his inspection Spike simply looks at Cai, cocking his head side to side in as much apparent curiosity of Cai as the cyber-doc shown in him. No data-ports are in evidence, and Spike's bio-mechanical brain and heart are precisely where one would expect them to be in an organic lizard.

Leaving the mage’s shop, Logan makes his way back to the ATRV for some dinner and sleep. With not much to do with himself for the moment he still pretty much keeps to himself and helps out when he can. For the moment Logan’s priorities are to help Conner with the repairs and modifications, although for the moment the mechanic’s priorities are probably more tied up with the soul stone. After dinner he’ll help Cale with the clean up so that the chef is not stuck with all the dishes by himself.

Lying down to sleep for the night, Logan flops onto his bed as usual. Finishing up his last cigarette for the day, the psychic crosses his legs and throws his other hand behind his head on top of his pillow. As the white cylinder begins to burn down to the filter he lazily tosses it over towards his ashtray but misses due to fatigue. Eh, oh well…I’ll take care of that tomorrow. Ugh, this pillow is lumpy as hell. I need to invest in something nicer when I get the chance. As his eyelids begin to grow heavy, Logan sighs to himself and allows the peace to sleep to take him over. His body begins to fall numb and without notice the psychic is down for the count.

A familiar room, yet not an inviting one to Logan.

The psychic surveys his surroundings and realizes he’s home, although it’s a home he hasn’t seen in some time. No, this is certainly not the ATRV. It’s dimly lit, with only the flicker a few candles on the walls, and it reeks of stale smoke and the cheap perfume of a single-night lover. In the corner lies a simple bed and nightstand, and in the opposite corner holds a simple sink and mirror—only the basic amenities in life. Moving slowly, Logan approaches the mirror but does not look into it, still fearing the worst for his location. Reaching into the sink he finds a pool of water already in it and scoops it up between his hands—his hands, not those fake ones he sports in real life.

His worst fears are confirmed, he’s back home, or at least the home he once knew—the Kingdom. Splashing the water onto his face in an attempt to wake up from this self-made horror film, Logan shudders as he remains in the room. Glancing up from the sink the psychic peers into the mirror for the first time and jumps back at the sight he sees standing behind him—his mother. Whipping around, Logan places his back and hands against the porcelain to brace himself. With wide eyes he stares at the image of his mother, however there is something not quite right about her. At first glance all appears fine—her angelic face, those beautiful green eyes, even her flowing black hair that always appeared perfectly kept yet somewhat out of place. But he wasn’t sold.

“Logan, you seem scared of me? Do you not remember your own mother?”

His teeth chattering slightly, Logan struggles to breathe, “…my mother? No, you are certainly not my mother. You almost got her looks right…and even her voice.” Wincing slightly, Logan fights back the repressed memories of the only woman he ever truly loved. “But no, you are not her. Nor will you ever be. So reveal yourself.”

“Logan….” Her voice as sweet as ever, “It is me!”

“No….”

“My child I swear to you that—.”

“NO! DON’T YOU TRY TO IMPEROSNATE HER!” Feeling a long forgotten anger course through his veins once more, Logan wills his psi-rapier into existence and holds the crackling blue foil at the throat of the woman. “Now I will only ask you once more…reveal yourself before I strike you down.”

Smiling devilishly, the imposter posing as Logan’s mother nods at him; slowly her eyes turn to charcoals and the skin on her face begins to peel back and flake off—turning into embers as it hits the floor. Bringing his psi-sword up to a full swing, Logan feels his arm catch in mid-air. Turning around he sees the image of Jo holding back his attack and the grabbing his other arm—pinning the two behind his back. Struggling to break free, Logan watches as the once image of his mother continues to morph into something devilish and destructive. As her skin continues to flake away and her hair fall to the floor, Logan watches as the walls begin to ooze blood from the ceiling, growing more and more scared as the crimson liquid pools at his feet.

With Logan by the arms, Jo smashes the psychic’s face into the mirror above the sink, shattering the glass upon impact. The pooling blood now at his ankles, Logan feels Jo’s immense strength once more as the man grab’s Logan by the nape of the neck and crashes his head through the porcelain sink. Bloodied and battered, Logan’s gaze becomes hazy and unclear but soon the person who once claimed to be his mother stands over him. His voice gives away who he is long before his appearance does—the King. “You will bow before me, Sharpe! In life you may have taken me but in the afterlife I will have my vengeance! When you die on the mortal plane rest assured that your body will find its way to hell and when it does I will be waiting for you ready to exact my vengeance you pathetic fool! I shall take from you for all of eternity…remember this.” Feeling Jo’s strength once more, Logan finds his head being shoved under the now knee-deep lake of blood. Feeling the last few breaths fall from his mouth, darkness consumes Logan.

Shooting up from his bed, Logan pants heavily and his eyes dart around the room. When the realization that it was only a dream finally takes hold in his mind he begins to calm. Pulling the sweat from his brow with his left hand, the psychic lashes out in anger by tossing his pillow across the room. A look of bewilderment comes over him once he spies the horrid pendant that he left at Fort Dakota. Feeling the rage boil over inside of him, Logan grabs the pendant and leaps from his bed. Screaming at the top of his lungs, Logan bellows inside of the ATRV, “Who the fuck brought this wretched thing back on board!? Is this some sort of sick joke!?” Stepping out of his room, Logan winds up and chucks the pendant down the hallway of the ATRV as hard as he can.

Making mental note of the unusual dried flowers for a later, possible investigation, Cale returns to the ATRV late in the day to stock his spice rack, storage bins,, and freezer with the help of Sir Ben.
"Hmmmmm... Give me 2 ounces of that Flower. I'll check it out when I get a chance. Have to remember this place the next time I'm in the area." Paying for the unknown spice, Cale starts heading back to the ATRV. Upon reaching his domain, the cook packs everything away. Making sure that the freezer is loaded newest meat to the back, oldest to the front.

Since Spike is being so incredibly docile during the inspection, Dr. Cai Caradoc does not hesitate to open the small, hidden compartment along Spike's dorsal ridge. If Spike shows agitation, he'll try and trick him by giving him some scraps to keep him busy while he opens it. If it does not open without tools, he'll go get what is needed from either his own sets or borrow it from Conner's tool box. When he's done, he'll put whatever tools he borrowed back.

Before opening the compartment, Doc will run his Medical Sensor Hand over it just to make sure there's no nasty surprise there.

The compartment opens with a slight push in a certain spot that's not visible to the naked eye. Inside is simply a small 6"x3"x3" empty space reminiscent of the many concealed storage compartments which he has installed in bionic appendages over the years. This compartment is small. At best, it could contain a small holdout pistol.

Dr. Cai Caradoc looks at the little compartment and giggles a bit to himself. "Oh, brilliant, you're like a small box with legs. I bet you could carry my lunch in there.. or my hold-out pistol. Hmm, a box of matches... crayons... a bar of soap... I would almost wish you were bigger, except I wager you'd eat more than you already do. Seriously, are you a bionic lizard or a pig?"

Doc pulls his hold-out pistol out of his shoulder holster and places it in the compartment, then closes it. "I bloody well hope you can't open that or the next time I see it, it will be trailing out your backside!"

I'm not much for shoot-outs and skullduggery, but it wouldn't hurt to have a hidden pistol about in a tight spot. You never know when it could come in handy!

Doc pats Spike on the head and whispers, "Well now, this will be our little secret, hmm?"

Startled, Doc jumps up from his bunk, where he was taking a nap with Spike curled up at his feet. He watches the pendant go sailing past his bunk, following the outburst. Well bugger that. I don't know what his problem with that bauble might be, but I'm certainly not taking responsibility for giving it back to him now! He might be a bumbling sideshow attraction with all that mumbo-jumbo about mind powers, but he's no slouch in combat. No, I think I'll just keep mum. What he doesn't know can't hurt me.

Cai calls down to Logan's bunk, "A practical joke, aye? So I'm not the only one on this team who likes to give you a hard time?"

Picking up Spike, Doc makes his way over to Logan. Given the lizard's size and weight, this is like picking up a large dog and trying to keep hold of him. If Spike wiggles free, then Doc will shrug and continue on anyway. He pets the bionic lizard while he talks, "Dear Logan, perhaps your social skills could use a little brushing up. Then no one would consider picking on you. Maybe you could... um... ah... Wait, what am I saying? I have none myself. Nevermind, just keep being you. Friends are overrated. Lorelei watches as Conner turns on his heels and walks back to the counter. With her arms still crossed, she lifts her chin slightly to lock eyes with the tall mechanic. She listens patiently as he explains his rationale for leaving the soul stone behind. Before long, Lorelei's arms fall to her sides as she relaxes somewhat. “You are very perceptive, Conner,” she tells him with just a hint of a smile upon her lips. In an effort to reassure the group of her good nature, she adds, “I've seen a lesser, but similar artifact change a person for the worse. I want to see this stone destroyed before it has the chance to taint an otherwise good person. However, the souls should be released first. They deserve peace. Once you have smashed the stone, it will not be possible to use the stone for its intended purpose. The shards will be worth nothing. I'm sorry.”
John Walker wrote:John nods in agreement with the mage, "Personally, I think that this would be the best way to go. We'd kill two birds with one stone, so to speak." He turns to Lorelei and asks, "Would there be anyone you can recommend who is trustworthy enough to enact such a ritual, ma'am?"
“I'm afraid I haven't studied the ritual involved to perform an exorcism,” Lorelei admits to the reverend. She looks up at Ignacius, hoping he might be able to help with the stone, but before she can ask, her colleague decides to close up shop.
The Game Master wrote:Caladores adds, "The onus is yours. Ms. Stark, if you're intent on exorcizing the stone prior to its destruction, I would recommend Sister Harcourt just around the corner. She doesn't have the greatest business acumen, but she has a big heart and would likely do such for a paltry fee." Caladores finishes his transaction with Lorelei by adding a fee for her services to her universal card.
Lorelei accepts the payment and recommendation with a small nod. “Thank you, Ignacius. Take care of yourself.” Signaling for Conner to take the stone, Lorelei retrieves her cloak and shoulders a small pack. Then she heads out the front door with the others. When John says goodbye, Lorelei extends a hand out to him. “It was indeed a pleasure, Mister...” she pauses with the realization that she did not catch the reverend's name. “That ring is quite remarkable. I hope your friend makes good use of it. And Ignacius is right about that Fennodi place.” She releases John's hand (providing he took her hand in the first place), then turns to Conner. “Sister Harcourt's shop is this way,” she tells him, taking a few steps in the right direction.

About half a block later, Lorelei looks up at Conner as they walk together. “You mentioned a mission...are you and your friends members of a mercenary group?” she asks him, hoping to learn more about those that stumbled upon one of greatest magical artifacts she had ever seen. If they are in the habit of finding magical items, perhaps they'd hire someone able to identify them.

Upon arriving at the shop, Lorelei asks for Sister Harcourt, explains the problem with the soul stone and inquires about an exorcism. “I realize it's getting late, Sister, but Conner is leaving Lazlo in the morning.”

Reaper sets to work on modifying the gear around the ATRV, even helping install the turret. "I'm glad the cyclone boosts my strength. I'm a pretty strong guy, but the cyclone makes it child's play." he explains to Shane.

During the course of the day he'll go over some of his thoughts about some of the teammates, "Shane, I'm a bit concerned about Logan. I know he puts on a good show, but the man just lost two arms. I know from where I am from folks don't normally have access to this level of prosthesis, but there is a huge rehabilitation process and grieving for the lost limb. Do you think he'll hold up in the next fight? I guess what I'm asking is can we count on him? He is a force to be reckoned with when he's on the ball. And I just want to make sure that will be the case going forward."

Later that night after everyone is asleep. Logan has his nightmare and Reaper bolts out of bed. Racing out of his room in his Minmei patterned boxers, and his gallant laser pistol in hand. "For Minmei's sake! What the hell is going on, and who do I have to kill to get some sleep around here!"

Keeping his gaze on Ignacius while Lorelei talks Will can't help but think Why would a smart mage like Ignacius here be associated with filth like her?. Listening to, but not acknowledging Lorelei, he asks “You mean, this is one of THE Nine Rings of Elder? Rurga be praised! Do you know what this means?” He's cut off by the other's outbursts however and at the insistence of Conner, he gives the ring back for the time being. “I know that you don't trust me. I can see it in your leader Shane's eyes. But know that I will pay for this ring in good time. There will never be anything worth giving this up. However, I won't become a slave for your mercenary troop either. That arrangement would never work out well.”
Lorelei wrote:“I'm afraid I haven't studied the ritual involved to perform an exorcism,” Lorelei admits to the reverend.
Without looking at her, Will mumbles “That much is obvious...” loud enough to be heard by those around him. When it's handed back to him, Will slips the ring on his finger, looks at it for a while and then leaves the shop as requested by Mr. Caladores. He follows Lorelei to Sister Harcourt's shop and stands with his arms crossed in the back while they deal with their business. Who does this hack of a woman think she is? I have half a mind to tell her where to stick that stone. Why do they trust her and not me? He was going to give her that stone but he won't even think about letting me hold on to this ring... Will's face is one of extreme displeasure at this point. When they are done in the shop, Will asks the members of the group, while expressly not looking at Lorelei “Would anyone like to go to that restaurant? I'm starving.”

Conner gives William a sideward glance at what seems to be out of character for the mage. What was that all about? That didn’t sound like something he would say. I pull him aside later.

Just after stepping out of the shop Conner speaks to the group. “Alright lets huddle up here. First off William, I don’t want you to think I don’t trust you. You gained my respect by staying to help a group of strangers defend a town that you had no connection to from a psycho killer that wanted to enslave it. And with my respect came trust. Now you said you saw it in Shane’s eyes. That I don’t know about, but I can tell you this. Shane is good at judging peoples characters and he asked all of you that helped out at Bow Island to join the group.” He now looks between John and Will. “By asking the both you to join he is showing you and everyone else in the group that he trusts you. Now that whole thing about being a slave to our little band of merry men well…just to let you know Logan’s tongue is as shape as his mind. You have been fore warned.” He rolls his eyes at Logan while flashing him a smile.

“Alright, why don’t the three of you go get something to eat and then head back to the Pathfinder. There is no need for the four of us to be there just standing around doing nothing, plus it might freak the lady out a little if we did. I would let you use my cred stick to pay for your food but it only works with my thumb print. How about the next place we end up that has a bar the first round is on me. I’m going to hang on to the ring a little while long and see if Sister Harcourt can use it to help speed her along. I will catch up with ya’ll later to night.”
Lorelei Stark wrote: “You mentioned a mission...are you and your friends members of a mercenary group?”
Conner is always willing to share something about himself with a pretty lady when she asks. Even if she is really asking about the group. “Yes we are. The name of the group is The Roughnecks. Besides myself and the other three you just meet there are five more. There is Shane our leader that William and I spoke of, Dr. Cai, Cale, Sir Ben, and Clay. Cai is a cyber-doctor extraordinaire as he would say, just don’t introduce yourself as a mage right away. He thinks you magic users and psychics are all about mumbo-jumbo. Cale is our chef. And when I say chef I mean a real chef. We don’t have to eat that pre-package junk food stuff with him around. Hell, he would be insulted if asked if we should pack some just in case. Then there is Sir Benjamin, I believe he is a cyber-knight. Big man as well, I have to actually look up to look him in the eyes. Keeps mostly to himself for some reason. John, Will and Ben just joined the group. It was after the fight where we found this ring and stone. Last off we have Clay. He also goes by Reaper. He is a combat pilot from some earth in another dimension. There they use a technology called robotech. His suit of armor is very impressive. The power source is actually a type of organic cold fusion! Man if I could figure out how it works I could make a kick ass suit of power armor!” Conner catches himself before he begins to get too excited talking about machines. “As you can tell I am the mechanic of the group. I'm pretty handy with the big guns too. Just to let know I don’t have any problem with magic though. Matter of fact I deeply respect it. I know it is a just like any other tool and in the right hands it can do a great amount of good. Actually there is a sixth person so to speak. His name is Dave and he is our robot. He just mostly drives our ATRV but he is nice guy once you get to know him. So tell me a little bit about yourself. Where you’re from, what it is you do, if there is anyone else you travel with. You know the usual stuff.”

At Sister Harcourt's Book Nook
Conner and Lorelei enter the small book shop, and walk past the shelves of re-print copies of old literary classics. Sister Harcourt, it turns out, is a former Grey Seer who left the order after finding spiritual and philosophic enlightenment less fulfilling than satisfying her intellectual curiosity. After some discussion of the soul gem and what they wish to accomplish, Sister Harcourt closes up the front of the shop, escorts the unusual pair to a back room, and performs an exorcism upon the demonic stone. After she's done with her ritual, the inner luster of the gem is gone and it looks to be a rather plain stone of an unusual color and texture. Sister Harcourt refuses any sort of payment and simply says that she's "paying forward" a kindness done her earlier that week.

At Frenald's Fine Eats
Will, John, and Logan all find the Fennodi's restaurant in good order and order a lavish meal. Some time after they have ordered (measured by Logan going through three cigarettes during this period), Conner and Lorelei arrive, and a conversation occurs over a fine meal which includes some slightly exaggerated retelling of their exploits and travels as well as unexaggerated descriptions of Cale's own fine cooking. Despite the expected lack of meat items on the menu, the spread which arrives is both filling, satisfying, and delectable, and the group leaves after a few hours utterly stuffed and carrying on in a good manner as they escort Lorelei back to the ATRV to meet Shane and oversee the destruction of the soul gem.

Back at the ATRV
Cale seals the fate of the delectable and mammoth golden apple before it spoils, and, after a few hours of preparation and baking, sets the pie on the conference table in the observation deck to cool.

Shane, Cai, Sir Benjamin Payne, and Dave have managed to incorporate the ten PRC-5 radios into various items. During their labors, they are constantly snacking and enjoying the luxuries that come with not being on the road. Before the others return, they have also prepared the turret and Conner's tools sufficiently that the operator should be able to get the rest of the work done while on the road.
TGM NOTE: Shane, please select the specific ten items which are to be upgraded to the PRC-5 radio system. Notify me via PM.

Later that night, at the ATRV
The night sky has been dark for some hours despite the pale glow of the city lights when everyone has reassembled back at the ATRV along with their guest, Lorelei. The smell of apple pie emanates from the interior of the ATRV, and the night air is chill but not uncomfortably so.

(TGM NOTE: Let's get this moved along quickly, folks. There's a mystery to solve!)

“The Roughnecks,” Lorelei repeats softly to herself. Along the way to Sister Harcourt's bookshop, she listens intently to what Conner has to say about the mercenary group and tries to commit it all to memory. “You sound like quite a team,” Lorelei remarks before making a couple of comments and asking some questions of her own. “I could tell right away that you are not a mage. You don't have that sort of aura about you, Conner. William, on the other hand...” The battle magus' cool reception comes to mind. Could he be a sojourner? “I realize you haven't known him for very long, but is he normally suspicious of other magi?” Wrapping her cloak a bit tighter around her, Lorelei hopes that Will isn't from Dweomer. Why did you have to curse me, Nathan? Conner's comments regarding his respect for magic draws Lorelei out of her thoughts. “I wish more people were as understanding as you when it comes to magic,” she tells him with a small sigh.

Changing the subject slightly, Lorelei says, “Reverend Walker seems like a good man. Logan could stand to learn some manners though. Will you tell me more about your leader? Shane, was it? What sort of person is he? Why did he form the Roughnecks? And what are the goals of your group? Do you often find magical artifacts in your travels?”
Conner Gunsmith wrote:“So tell me a little bit about yourself. Where you’re from, what it is you do, if there is anyone else you travel with. You know the usual stuff.”
I suppose it's only fair... After spending a few seconds to consider her reply, Lorelei takes a deep breath and tells Conner, “I am from Dweomer, although Lazlo has been my home these last couple of weeks.” She quickly decides that he doesn't need to know the details surrounding the curse that prevents her from returning home. “Ignacius is an old friend of my mentor. I came here on my own, hoping he would identify something of importance to me. Unfortunately, he was not able to help, but I'm glad that I could be of assistance to him this afternoon.” Lorelei looks up at Conner with a small smile. “It was truly an honor to examine that ring. I've studied magic for most of my life and I've never seen anything quite like it.”

After Sister Harcourt performs the exorcism upon the soul stone, Lorelei thanks her for her kindness. She walks to Frenald's with Conner and enjoys a meal with a few of his friends. However, she's careful to keep her distance from William, sensing that he'd rather not have anything to do with her.

Once they arrive at the ATRV, Lorelei politely waits for Conner (or one of the others) to introduce her to Shane.

When Conner returns with Lorelei, Shane raises an eyebrow as to why Conner has brought her to meet them. He asks for an introduction to the woman accompanying him and offers his hand to her. "Pleased to meet you, Miss Stark." Shane is unsure why she is here and asks, "What can I do for you?"

Once he has concluded meeting Lorelei, Shane will get a report on the items that they acquired in Medicine Hat from Conner in private. "You did a good job. I'm glad you managed to free the poor souls that were trapped in that stone. A lesser man may have given into the temptation of using the power contained in that stone and been corrupted by it, but you didn't. You are a good man, Conner. I'm proud to know I have people with your moral fiber on my team." He is taken aback at the ring's identity and worth. "Wow. 50 million credits? Good call on not giving it up."

Shane takes a second to figure out what to do with the ring. I can't allow that ring to get out on the market again, another Grisabella could get her hands on it, and look what she did with it. It's just too powerful. Shane will excuse himself from Conner's company and approach William once he figures out what to do with the ring. "William. We need to discuss the ring. I understand it is quite a powerful object and is pretty much priceless to a mage. So we have a little problem. Basically, it is worth so much that you won't be able to pay the rest of us more than a pittance for it in order to keep it, and we aren't going to let it go for fraction of what it is worth. So, I have a proposal for you. What I propose is that the ring stays the property of the Roughnecks. You may use it, but if you leave us, the ring stays with us. Do we have an agreement?"

Pre-Sleep

Back at the ATRV, Logan’s nose tickles as the smell of Cale’s freshly cooked pie courses through the vehicle. Like a bloodhound he follows the scent back to its location and ultimately—hopefully—Cale, “Hey bud thanks for baking me the pie and all but I’m really more of a Pecan Pie kind of guy, probably should have told you that before you went through all the trouble.” Finishing with his trademark smile, Logan laughs a bit to himself before clapping the Chef on the shoulder, “All joking aside it smells delicious but apple just isn’t my flavor. Speaking of not my flavor, we all ate at some vegetarian restaurant tonight. Buddy, how about a full-meat breakfast tomorrow morning, eh? Bacon, sausage, ham, steak, eggs…all things good in life!”

After placing his order with Cale, Logan saunters back downstairs to find Conner to make sure everything went off without a hitch after he left. Heh, I still can’t believe that ugly-ass ring was worth fifty big ones. Bunch of crap if you ask me. Where are the diamonds? The rubies? The gold? Piece. Of. Junk! Finding Conner introducing the woman to Shane, Logan offers him a slight nod and waits for a break in the conversation, “Yo man, how’d it go with that stone? You end up getting all the evilness out of it? By the way, you said hooking up that Force-Field with my armor is pretty simple—is it simple enough for me to do or is it something I’d need an expert like you for?”

Post-Nightmare
Cai wrote: Picking up Spike, Doc makes his way over to Logan. Get a pet... worked for me!"
Still fuming from the thought of someone pulling a prank on him, Logan eyes the Doc. Nostrils flaring and shoulders widened, the psychic closes his eyes for a moment to try and calm himself. Taking a few deep breaths and cracking his neck from side-to-side, Logan forces a thin smile and even reaches out to try and scratch underneath Spike’s chin, “You’re probably right Doc—cute pet by the way. You two seem to…fit.” Patting Cai on the back despite whatever protest the man may offer, Logan rubs his eyes and walks back to his room to grab a smoke and his lighter. Walking back down the hallway, Logan picks up the cursed pendant and tosses it outside the ATRV through the air lock. Firing off a mock salute, Logan mutters softly to himself, “Good riddance you wretched thing, you.”

From there he heads up to the observation deck, too worried about falling back asleep for the time being. Plopping his ass in the pilot’s seat, Logan kicks his legs up on the panel but makes sure not to hit any buttons or accidently trigger any sensors. Sighing to himself he sparks the cigarette and inhales deeply. Holding it for a moment, Logan slowly lets the smoke trickle through his mouth before sucking it back in through his nostrils once more. With the smoke back inside his lungs, Logan casually blows a few O’s into the air and slowly blows out the rest of the smoke through them. Laughing slightly to himself, Logan becomes lost in his thoughts. That dream was too real. What if the King really is waiting for me in hell? His gaze changes slightly. I hope he is—that’ll give me another chance to kill him all over again. And it’ll give me a chance to square off with Jo once more and not make that same mistakes as last time. For now they’ll have to wait though, cause I ain’t dying anytime soon. And from what I hear that’s the only way to get there.

"No, not that I know of." Conner looks down at Lorelei at her next question with a smile and a fake look shock. “Miss. Stark are you wondering if you could join our little band of trouble makers? Well it just happens that we had a young woman decide that the group was not for her. It was not because we have evil intent I assure you. It turned out that her personal mission was for her people and took precedence over the groups. I believe she was a Native American. She had a hard time riding in our vehicle. I don’t have the final say if you can that is up to Shane. Now about him. He is good man as well as a good leader; he always puts the safety and well being of the group first. Shane is not the founder of the group though; that was Baker. Right now Baker is back at our headquarters in MercTown. Now why the group was started I’m not sure. I guess just some people looking for some work. That has all changed now. I mean it doesn’t hurt that we make money in the process, but that is not the only reason. No the main reason is to do some good in this world. At least I know that is why Shane and I do it.”

Lorelei wrote: "Do you often find magical artifacts in your travels? I came here on my own, hoping he would identify something of importance to me. Unfortunately, he was not able to help”
“It is funny you asked that in that yes we do for some reason. I believe every time we have come back from a mission we have ended up with some magic items. I am sorry to hear that what you are looking for could not be found. Hopefully in the future we can find it. And I must say it was an honor to meet you. It is comforting to know that I ended up meeting someone as nice as you from something like that stone. I know it was the ring that brought you to the meeting, but it was the stone that brought me to Ignacius’s place. Looks like we are here; let me introduce you to Shane.”

After telling Shane about the items he tells him that Ms. Stark is there to watch him hold up is side of their deal in the final destruction of the stone.

As Logan is walking up to him he asks. “Is that apple pie I smell? Damn I wish I hadn’t eaten so much. About the stone, yes the souls are gone and I’m about to finish the job now. Don’t worry about the force-field I will take care of that later tonight or tomorrow.”

Conner leaves Logan and makes his way up stairs following his nose to stare at the apple pie. He turns to Cale. “OH MY GOD THAT SMELLS SO GOOD! It completely sucks that I cannot eat another bite right now. I ate with the rest of guys at some vegetarian place and even without meat I am stuffed. The stuff just swells up in the stomach you know. There is woman that joined us at the restaurant and then back here. You should meet her; she is nice if you know what I mean.” He finishes with a wink.

He will ask if Lorelei is staying the night and if she is he will offer up his room. He will show her the room as he locks his bed up and pulls the spare one down. After suiting up in the exoskeleton armor Conner grabs his biggest wrench and walks outside with it and the stone. He will not stop smashing the thing until it is in small pieces. When he steps outside he notices Logan’s pendant. What the hell is that doing out here? I’m sure he will want it back. He will put it on his work bench and give it back to Logan in the morning. The rest of the night and early into the next morning Conner spends the time doing his work. The turret comes first so he will stay in the armor so he can carry the turret to the top of the ATRV. From there he changes into his work outfit. After the turret is hooked up and working properly he moves onto hooking the force-fields up to Logan’s and William's armors.

Cale
Cale finds that, like most cooks, he's the only one who hasn't had much opportunity to eat. He's simply been too busy today: taking store of the group's perishable goods, itemizing and inventorying the larder, shopping in town for good deals, searching for new and exotic spices, storing everything from his purchases, updating his itemized inventory (he's quite studious about such record-keeping), and baking that delicious-looking (if of modest size) apple pie. He finds that as he tidies up his kitchen and quarters that evening, all he can think about it that pie. His largely neglected stomach also growls at him throughout the evening, building from a low growl and general urge to snack into a near compulsion to eat the pie whose aromatic vapors tease his nostrils and excite his salivary glands like in one of those cartoons from before the cataclysm.

Sir Benjamin Payne
Before Lorelei arrives, Sir Ben takes Shane aside and thanks him for trust, but insists that he's felt compelled to remain in Lazlo ever since they've arrived. He explains that it might be a summons from his order, or just an inner voice telling him that their path and his were not the same, at least not right now. Sir Ben tells Shane not to worry about William--he really is a good sort, he's just a bit impulsive at times. After this, the longest conversation he's had since receiving his scars. Sir Benjamin Payne, of the Order of the Cyber-Knights, grabs his own personal possessions and departs.

Post Logan's Nightmare

Reaper follows Logan up to where the young man lights up a cigarette, and plops down in a chair beside him. "Dude, what can I do to help? I know you lost your arms, and the Doc put on some nice new ones, but they aren't your own. You need to grieve for the loss, and accept it." Reaper pulls off his most precious and valuable item. The one thing that is more valuable than his Cyclone and his life, "Here." He places the pendant in Logan's hand. His voice serious and somber, "Listen to her words, let your mind embrace the melody. Minmei can help, and save lost souls."

With that he gets up and walks to the door, adjusting the waist on his Minmei printed boxers. "Give it back when you have found your center."

Dr. Cai Caradoc looks at Logan with a sense of confusion on his face. "Dear Logan, Spike is not cute. He is a trained killing machine. Well, as long as the enemy is made out of a good quantity of metal, anyway. He'd eat through them in seconds flat. He's probably wanted in several dimensions."

When Logan pats him on the back, Doc just stares after him with that same quizzical look. He turns to Spike and shrugs while raising his eyebrows. "I don't know what that was all about, pal. Maybe we're growing on him. It's the bio-systems arms, isn't it? He feels some sort of kinship towards me for lifting him up out of the darkness and into the age of the Modern Man, albeit kicking and screaming. I suppose it's not so bad, having a... friend. But if he's going to be so amenable, I am going to have to find some other poor schmuck to constantly harass. My twisted ego demands it, damn it! Too bad all the easy targets are whining and leaving. Where's a haughty charlatan when you really need one?"

A mischievous grin forms on his lips when he realizes Conner's team may have just returned with the perfect target.

Logan just sits there speechless as Clay hands him his treasured holographic pendant. Accepting the gift he still remains there as Clay walks back out of the room. Smirking mockingly, Logan holds the pendant in front of his face. Is he serious? I mean we entertain his foolish obsession but seriously, how can some stupid hologram help me? Plus, I couldn’t care less about losing my arms, it’s my powers I miss. Placing the pendant down for a moment, Logan continues to puff away on his cigarette, relishing in every blackened breath. As he smokes his eyes shift back down to Clay’s gift. Heh, stupid pendant…. Shaking his head slightly the psychic laughs to himself once more. With a heavy breath, Logan thinks out loud, “I can’t believe I’m actually going to do this….”

Activating the Min-Mei music maker, Logan watches as the hologram does its thing and plays its songs. With the pendant in hand, Logan holds it up in front of his face and blows a cloud of smoke through the shimmering image of Clay’s obsession. Dropping his hand, Logan closes his eyes and shakes his head back and forth. No offense to Clay, but there was no way this was gonna’ work. Opening his eyes once more, Logan jumps back a little when he sees the pendant hovering gently in the air where his hand was holding it before. “…what the hell? Wait, am I….” With his cigarette stuck between his index and middle fingers, Logan points at the pendant and drags his fingers back and forth, pleasantly surprised when the item follows his movements. Telekinesis -3 I.S.P Letting the pendant fall back into his hand, Logan performs another test. Staring at the glowing ember of his cigarette, Logan closes an eye and watches as it suddenly goes out. Pyrokenesis: Extinguish Flame -4 I.S.P. Slowly a devilish smile crosses his angled face, “Well what do you know…that son-of-a-bitch was right.”

Leaping up from his seat, Logan moves with a newfound pep in his step much like a child on Christmas morning. Walking down the hallway of the ATRV, Logan stops at the Doctor’s door and reaches out to him. Telepathy: -4 I.S.P. Ohhhh, Doc…guess who found his mojo again. Don’t be upset if I continue to outdo you on a daily basis. Snickering to himself, Logan moves to Clay’s room and leans in the doorway. Once he has Clay’s attention he’ll toss him the pendant. “Hey bud, you were right, I don’t know what that pendant did but somehow I found my old powers again. Thanks for the help man, by the way, don’t worry about my arms—these new ones seem to be working just fine, although I feel a bit weaker than before.” Once Clay has his pendant back, Logan goes back to his room and spends the rest of the night in Meditation, too excited to get any real rest.

((Haha no one ever told Logan that he'd get his old powers back with the new arms so I figured this was a funny way to do it.))

Lorelei nods slightly as Conner tries to reassure her about the other mage. She makes a mental note to ask Will about Dweomer sometime. Let's not make any assumptions just yet, she reminds herself. Perhaps I don't fully understand the curse. It may not be effective this far from home and it's possible that Will truly doesn't like me.
Conner Gunsmith wrote:“Miss. Stark are you wondering if you could join our little band of trouble makers?”
“Yes. I suppose I am,” Lorelei replies, amazed by Conner's perception once again. She can't help smiling at his feigned expression of shock. Lorelei carefully considers everything he has to say regarding Shane, the Roughnecks and the magical items they've come across in their adventures. Lorelei finds herself quite impressed by what she hears. When Conner mentions MercTown she instantly thinks of the Collegiate Arcane. They may be able to help me.
Conner Gunsmith wrote:“I am sorry to hear that what you are looking for could not be found.
“I do hope you're right,” Lorelei replies with a sigh. More than anything, she'd like to rid herself of Nathan's curse and return home. She stops walking for a moment to look up at Conner. “A lesser man would have kept that stone; it has certainly been an honor to meet you as well,” Lorelei tells him, warmed by the thought of having a friend again. “And please, call me Lorelei.”
Shane Knight wrote:When Conner returns with Lorelei, Shane raises an eyebrow as to why Conner has brought her to meet them. He asks for an introduction to the woman accompanying him and offers his hand to her. "Pleased to meet you, Miss Stark." Shane is unsure why she is here and asks, "What can I do for you?"
“Pleased to meet you, Mr. Knight,” Lorelei says in a formal tone. She grasps his offered hand, gives it a confident shake, then goes on to explain her reasons for visiting. “Conner invited me here to witness the soul stone being destroyed. On the way, he told me much about you and your team and I'm convinced of your good nature.” Lorelei pauses for a couple of seconds to let her words sink in before going on. “Conner also hinted at your team's luck in coming across magical artifacts. However, it seems you lack an experienced mage to identify your findings. If it isn't too forward, I'd like to lend my knowledge and talents to your cause. As a Lady Magus of Dweomer, I've been studying magic and cataloging magical items for nearly twenty years. I assure you, Mr. Knight, I'm fully qualified for the task. Ignacius Caladore will vouch for me. I do not require much by way of compensation; room and board, enough to cover basic supply expenses and safe passage to MercTown.”

Lorelei allows Shane a moment to mull over her suggestion.

All though the day, the Master Chef's stomach gets louder in it's demand to be filled. After finishing up, he finally notices it. "Alright, lets go get something to eat." Hearing his stomach growl in disagreement, he makes a consession. "Alright one slice now, then we'll go get something." With that, the human fuel tank settles down in agreement.

Walking over to the savory pie that he made, Cale pulls a knife. "I swear, you are more trouble than a company of Dog Boys." In reply his stomach gurgles in a way, if was human, would have a smirk on it face. And with that, he cut a slice to place on a plate.

Once the first bite is in his mouth, Cale knows deep inside that he would be hard-pressed to share even a morsel of this with the others--even the ones he genuinely liked. Before a half an hour has elapsed, he looks at the pie tin and his plate and realizes with some astonishment, and no small amount of shame, that he's eaten the whole pie. In a word, it was simply delicious.

Conner Gunsmith wrote:Just after stepping out of the shop Conner speaks to the group.
The look on William’s face just barely betrays his surprise at Conner’s words. “Well, we’ll see what your Baker has to say to me when we return. That town needed my help and I was glad to offer it. And I’d be glad to throw my skills in on your side at any time. I just need to know that I’m welcome. And Logan? I’ve seen sharper.” William looks to Logan and smirks at this comment.
Conner Gunsmith wrote:“Alright, why don’t the three of you go get something to eat and then head back to the Pathfinder.
William sweeps his hair back and nods. He reluctantly hands the ring back over to Conner and then looks to the rest of the group. “Food sounds amazing. Shall we?”
The Game Master wrote:At Frenald's Fine Eats
As talkative as all get-out when it’s just the three of them, William clams up when the other two arrive. When Lorelei tells her stories, Will makes sure to look in the opposite direction as if waiting for a waiter to appear. Dear lords, woman…silence yourself. You’ll put the restaurant to sleep…

When they head back to the ATRV, William makes sure that he’s not walking in line with Lorelei. In fact, he makes sure that he’s walking behind her, in case his bad feelings about her pay off and she pulls something.
When at the ATRV, William heads to his quarters and gets cleaned up. Then he hears a knock at his door.
Shane Knight wrote:Shane takes a second to figure out what to do with the ring.
William comes out of his quarters to talk to Shane. He stays quiet until Shane is done out of respect for his status as the group leader. “You are right. This is both powerful and priceless. And being new here, I would be a fool to attempt to barter in anyway for it. So I will agree to it being the property of the Roughnecks and if I leave, I will…give the ring back to you. However…” Will looks both ways to make sure they are alone before he continues. “I do not want anyone else using the ring. While I am with this group, I want sole rights to this artifact. There are other…unsavory elements among us and I would prefer the ring remain untainted.” Will crosses his arms to punctuate his sentence and awaits Shane’s answer.

Wrapping-Up in Lazlo
John Walker
John makes sure his shopping is done and his affairs in order before making himself comfortable and settling down on the observation deck for the night where he can see the stars above and fall asleep soundly.

Lorelei Stark
Shane greets Lorelei cordially and, after listening to her self-appraisal, agrees to accept her on a probational basis. He familiarizes her with the group's policies and shows her to the room formerly used by John, and welcomes her to use it as her quarters. Once she's got her stuff stowed, he fills her in on the gist of their current mission and tells her to get her affairs in order as they're due to depart in the morning.

Clay Torres
After helping out Logan, Clay finds himself able to sleep well through the night, his clear conscience helping him to bed knowing that the awesome power of Minmei aided yet another person find their true path.

William Summers
Shane nods his understanding of William's reticence toward sharing the ring with others in the team, and agrees that Will will have exclusive use of the ring while he's a member of the Roughnecks. In addition, he has full responsibility to ensure that it's kept safe and in the exclusive possession of the Roughnecks.

Logan Sharpe
Once Logan has discarded the pendant, he finds himself able to sleep soundly.

Cale Stepanik
Cale's full stomach gurgles happily throughout the night even as his ego takes a beating. Everyone at out while in Lazlo, and for once, his skills are not taken advantage of, nor appreciated. Still, he takes solace in the fact that quite possibly the best pie he's ever made was eaten by someone who could fully appreciate it; namely, himself. Later that night while he's sleeping, however, he is plagued by nightmares, and wakes multiple times feeling paranoid.

Cai Caradoc
Cai and Spike settle down for a night's rest before their upcoming mission once the matters of Logan's pendant, Spike's peculiar nature, and the identity and profession of the group's newest member are settled.

Conner Gunsmith
Conner makes quick work of the exorcized soul stone with a few well-placed blows from his enormous operator's wrench. Once that's done, he's able to draft up an itinerary for tomorrow's projects and settle down for a long slumber with a clear conscience. (You may upgrade your alignment one notch if you so wish.)

Shane Knight
Shane settles matters with the rest of the team regarding their new mage, the final disposition of the artifacts acquired at Medicine Hat, and the winter survival gear acquired at Lazlo that day.

Traversing the Northern Wastes
Lorelei picks up a few items from a wilderness outfitter in the early hours before the rest of the group is awake, and returns in time to see them begin stirring from their cabins. Cale has coffee brewing, but he looks absolutely haggard; as though he didn't sleep at all through the night. Everyone else wakes up in short order and drags their feet through an apparently normal routine of a quick shower in the new facility Conner built for such and retreating across the chilly deck back to their rooms to get dressed and ready for travel. Dave the robot wakens from his maintenance cycle at 0700 exactly, and greets Lorelei in an peculiar dialect that sounds very intellectual and all at once very arrogant. Once everyone's prepared, Dave and Cale set off on a journey north and east of Lazlo. Conner sets to work rigging electrical conduits within the interior of the ATRV, and Shane and a few others lend a hand as required, and as they are able during the journey. Once past the frozen, rolling hills and bluffs of the vast Canadian interior, the group travels farther north to avoid as much of the territory claimed by Free Quebec as they're able before cutting due east. Eventually, the topography changes, and as night falls, the group moves into some narrow canyons and valleys running through the hills and small mountains in the distance. They reach a ley line and find a sheltered, wider area along a small frozen stream, hemmed in on two sides by steep, rocky slopes. The formerly howling arctic wind eases slightly and the valley provides some protection from it, but frigid gusts continue to whip down the canyon. Conner finds himself putting the finishing touches on the turret in the bitter cold, but is so overcome by it that he's unable and unwilling to brave the elements any further to give it a proper series of shakedown tests.

The next morning, Shane gets into his SAMAS to do a little early morning scouting further up the canyon toward the designated coordinates. He sees the ley line turn abruptly to the northwest as it runs up against a solid chunk of rock, thrusting out of the ground at a sharp angle. This rock face is larger than the stony hills around them, rising higher and extending further to each side. The rock face looks odd, too. The rock seems different from the other hills and it doesn't fit among them as easily. It catches his attention, so he follows the ley line through a wider valley along its face. After about a half mile, he is startled to see a huge, circular door set into the strange mountain. The door is enormous--at least a full two hundred feet in diameter, and appears to be a huge metal portal, with two doors that join at a central seam. The bottom few feet of the door is covered over by earth and snow, but most of it is clearly visible, if hidden away in these valleys. The door is closed and there is no sign of any keypad or other opening mechanism. No markings of any sort are visible upon fly-by inspection. Reviewing the target coordinates in his HUD, Shane finds that he's within a few miles of the coordinates; this being about the best geographic intel that technology can provide given the absence of satellite assistance. Signaling the group to rendezvous at his coordinates, a short while later Dave and Cale bring the ATRV to within spitting distance of the massive artificial structure.

What are your intentions?
